Our Story

In 1971, a small group of Bridge enthusiasts travelled to Palmerston North to play at the Bridge Club there. They were Brian and Margery Cobbe, Phil and Audrey Walker, Jean and Wilson Lockhart, and Alan Coleman. A year later they decided to form a Bridge Club in Feilding. Brian Cobbe, a lawyer, drew up the necessary paperwork.

The club first used the Senior Citizens Hall in Bowen Street. Play was on Monday nights and all the tables, cards, and other equipment was stored in a locked cupboard. At the end of play, everything had to be locked away again, and chairs returned to their 'normal' positions.

Alan Coleman was a teacher and an experienced player. For many years he gave Bridge Lessons to new players. The club was very fortunate to have such a passionate and experienced player giving so much time and expertise.

The club began to grow steadily. In 1985, with Nessie Gollan as
President leading an enthusiastic committee, it was decided that the
club would purchase its own venue. A loan from the BNZ and                                                                                                                                                                                Debentures  from members allowed the club to purchase the St Johns
Hall in Derby Street. This was despite the club being a non-profit
                                                                                                                      organisation and having limited funds.

In 1997 the club celebrated 25 years with a Tournament and dinner at

                                                                                                                      This was a significant milestone.

Over the years, Club membership has grown and the loan was repaid.
Every President and Committee has improved the facility. It now has a

                                                                                                                       various organisations.

As the membership increased, playing sessions also increased. Sessions are now held on Monday and Thursday evenings and Fridays.
